Bringing the Night Sky Closer to Rural Karnataka
826 KRIES Schools. 31 Districts. A Journey to the Stars.
Thousands of students across Karnataka, including learners from rural and tribal communities, are getting the opportunity to observe the night sky through high-quality astronomical telescopes. With telescopes reaching 826 Karnataka Residential Educational Institutions Society (KRIES) schools across 31 districts, astronomy is moving beyond textbooks and becoming a direct, experiential learning experience.
How the Journey Began
In 2017, the Digital Mobile Planetarium initiative by Karnataka Science and Technology Promotion Society (KSTePS) brought immersive astronomy experiences to government schools across Karnataka. The programme helped introduce students to the wonders of space and reached more than 25 lakh students.
Building on this foundation, a new astronomy initiative was launched by Hon’ble Science Minister Shri N. S. Boseraju and KSTePS, with the establishment of high-end astronomical facilities in Karnataka Residential Schools to further strengthen science and astronomy learning.
From Seeing the Universe to Exploring It
The telescope initiative takes the next step in astronomy education by giving students the opportunity to observe celestial objects directly.
Students can explore:
- 🌙 The Moon and its surface features
- 🪐 Planets and their movements
- ⭐ Stars and star clusters
- 🌌 Deep-sky objects
- 🔭 Basic observational astronomy
The experience encourages students to observe, ask questions and develop a deeper interest in science and space.
The Project at a Glance
The initiative has expanded its reach across 826 KRIES schools in 31 districts of Karnataka, creating astronomy-learning opportunities for more than 2 lakh students and bringing the experience of exploring the night sky closer to learners across the state.
The Telescope
The project uses a 6-inch Newtonian Reflector Telescope designed to provide bright and detailed astronomical views while remaining practical for use within school environments.
